THE PLACE
Santa Ninfa - located between Segesta, Aliciae and
Selinunte, offers visitors the chance to enjoy a natural environment
dedicated to vineyards and olive grooves. This area is also rich of
woods, such as Finestrelle, which houses an ethno-anthropological
museum.
At few hundreds meters, there is the old castle of "Rampinzeri",
recently restored. This was Luigi Arias Giardina's feud, a marquis
who in 1605 founded the settlement of Santa Ninfa on "Three
Hills" (Castello, Croci and Rocche).
Unique of its kind is the karst cave of Santa Ninfa, rich of
bizarre concretions, gypsum crystallisations - a paradise for naturalists
and speleologists.
Originally inhabited by the Sycans and the Elyms, followed by Phoenicians
and Greeks who introduced grape cultivation, the Romans spread Sicilian
wines throughout their Empire, considering them the best wines of
that time.
THE COMPANY
To this breeding ground of old civilizations belongs
the history of the "Cantina Sociale Santa Ninfa",
founded in 1962 as a farming co-operative, by 13 wine growers.
Year by year, thanks to its strategic position, the company has become
the reference point of the local wine growers.
Today the co-operative counts more than 800 members, many belonging
to other areas. In Gibellina and Salemi, for example, grapes are grown
in a 1.500 hectare land: black and white grape plants are grown as
trees or at espalier in varieties such as Catarratto, Grecanico,
Inzolia, Nerello Mascalese, Sangiovese and Nero
d'Avola.
Most part of the grapes harvested by the members comes from vineyards
cultivated according to the CEE regulation n. 2078/92 A1 (sensible
reduction of pesticides) and A2 (biological production).
The transformation of grapes in white, red or rosè wines is
performed with sophisticated and modern machinery, using the
most appropriate techniques. In this way the products are very genuine
and meet the customer's needs.
